Washing a shell jacket – how?

Once you've made the wise decision to invest in a quality shell jacket, you'll obviously want it to last as long as possible. But because shell jackets are made to provide long-lasting protection from water, they need special care to maintain their optimal performance.

Always follow the washing instructions on your shell jacket. Shake the jacket to remove dust and dirt from the inside and outside of the jacket. Place it on a table, empty the pockets and then make sure all zippers are closed. Put it in the washing machine and make sure to use a suitable detergent – for example our specially formulated detergent for outdoor textiles. Do not use washing powder or products containing fabric softeners, bleach or stain removers. Then run a normal program at 30 degrees with low spin.

Washing a shell jacket without a dryer

If you don't have a dryer, or want to save the environment by letting your shell jacket air dry, you can do so. Simply hang it on a drying rack or let it dry on a hanger indoors or outdoors.

04

If the jacket loses its water-repellent properties

If you notice that water no longer beads and rolls off the jacket like it did when it was new, it is a clear sign that it needs a new impregnation so that it can become water-repellent again.

If so, you can wash it as described above. Once dry, hang your shell jacket on a hanger outside and follow the instructions on the waterproofing product.

05

How can my shell jacket be both breathable and waterproof?

The waterproof membrane incorporated into our shell jackets works by sandwiching a very thin layer of polyurethane between an outer fabric and a nylon backing. The membrane is covered with holes that are small enough to prevent water from penetrating, but large enough to allow moisture from perspiration to escape. The primary role of the outer fabric and backing is to protect the membrane from damage that would compromise the garment's waterproofness.

What is the difference between a shell jacket and a softshell?

A shell jacket is a combination of waterproof, windproof and breathable. They are designed to keep out the worst of the elements while ensuring you stay comfortable.

A softshell jacket is usually not waterproof, but highly breathable, windproof, and designed to keep you warmer. They tend to be water-repellent (able to withstand light showers and snow, but not sustained rain) and made of a generally softer, more comfortable fabric.

07

Can you use a shell jacket as a ski jacket?

Shell jackets are available for all adventures. Our Matterhorn model is perfect for skiing, while the Preiikestolen is fantastic as an all-around silent and softer shell jacket.

08

What is the difference between a rain jacket and a shell jacket?

A shell jacket is, as a rule of thumb, more breathable than a rain jacket and has several smart, technical features that make it more suitable for a wide range of outdoor activities.
